Thanks for the help, you have sorta helped me with this one, i followed the step by step instructions in setting up a small home/office network and connected them to the same work group,
If i open network spaces i can see the icon of the other computer but when i double click it i get the following error message

"\\HewettPackard is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions."
"The network path was not found"

As far as i am aware the defult user logon is the administrator on both computers so why this error is happening is beyond me but its now starting to get extremely annoying.

Can you be more specific about how "it failed"?

Are both PC and laptop connected OK to the router? Apart from sharing resources (files, printers) does everything else seem to work?

Setting up a simple Windows network is (or should be!) really straightforward. Just run the Network Setup Wizard on each PC. Don't allow the Wizard to make any automatic decisions, do it all manually. Follow the route which refers to a 'Residential Gateway'. When it prompts for a Workgroup name, ensure that it is spelt *identically* on each PC, or you could just use the default (MSHOME).

Err - that's it. It should now work. In My Network Places you should be able to see the shared resources, and be able to expand the Entire Network icon and Microsoft Windows Network icons to show the PCs on the network.

The only (?) thing which may prevent things working is a software firewall. You may need to select a menu option to allow file/resource sharing or (depending on which product you use) set up a 'trusted zone'. Why? Because Windows Networking relies on communication between the devices in the Workgroup so that each knows the name of the others and that each is online etc.

Yes, it is possible to view (both read and write, with the correct permissions) shared drives across a local area network. The DSL-G604T provides a local area network which comprises the router and all devices connected to it, whether by Ethernet or by wireless.

Assuming you are running Windows XP, the simplest way to do this is to set up a Windows Workgroup. For more info, goto the WinXP 'Help and Support Center', search on 'workgroup' and read the 'Home or small office network overview'.
